Earth is conquered.
Sol is lost.
One ship is tasked to free them.
One Captain to save them all.

When an alien armada destroys the United Earth Space Force and takes control of the human homeworld, newly reinstated Captain Annette Bond must take her experimental hyperspace cruiser Tornado into exile as Terra’s only interstellar privateer.

She has inferior technology, crude maps and no concept of her enemy, but the seedy underbelly of galactic society welcomes her so long as she has prizes to sell and money to spend.

But when your only allies are pirates and slavers, things are never as they seem—and if you become all that you were sworn to destroy, what are you fighting for?

The Terran Privateer Duchy of Terra Book 1 eBook Glynn Stewart

This is a fun military science fiction novel, based on a generic premise that has not so generic twists. First, the aliens. The start of the story would have you believe it's Independence Day 2 in written format, especially since the antagonist aliens look similar to the Independence Day aliens, standing on four legs with lots of tentacles and jet black, irisless eyes. These aliens are not really bad aliens, though. If this were Independence Day, the defeat of Earth's defenders would result in armageddon, but instead these aliens, the A!Tol are benevolent conquerors. They dissolve almost all government and install their own governor but they leave the rest of human society intact. They even bring in their own, far more advanced technology to uplift the humans. The A!Tol are not the only aliens in their imperium, and there are other alien races that are full members of the imperium. This reminds me of the Roman Empire, or the nomads' conquests of China in the past. There's a specific ruling caste but other peoples are integrated into the empire. Here, it happens that Earth is merely the latest peoples to be brought in.
The A!Tol are not the only aliens or even the superpower of the known galaxy. There are many different aliens that our hero, Bond, meets as she roams the galaxy after fleeing Earth's downfall. The problem is their uniqueness, such as cultures or histories, are not very well described, but the sheer variety and diversity of life in the galaxy is impressive. And again, the A!Tol are not the strongest nor the most advanced nation out there. In fact, this powerful and advanced (from Earth's perspective) imperium is a second-tier, "outer empire" with the real great powers located in the core of the galaxy.
The author also lays out Bond's character at the very beginning of the novel. She is said to have been more or less thrown out of the space navy for being too upright when she took a stand against a repeat rapist who happened to be her direct superior. That she did what was "right" despite the fact that she could have easily guessed what would happen to her career lays out two possible paths for her to take over the course of the novel, especially since she becomes a privateer, basically a glorified thug with a state-given license to raid and pillage. Either Bond retains her honor and ends this novel honorably, or she falls from the heavens and starts using any means necessary to accomplish her goals. The first is quickly made out to be the only likely path, really, when the A!Tol are described in detail. These aren't the kill-all-humans aliens of Independence Day. They're more like what the Europeans thought themselves to be to the native Americans, except the A!Tol really are living up to their talk, minus the religion.
I was disappointed by how the novel ended, though. The space battles and action were fun, and it would have been great to follow Bond about as she explores the galaxy. Despite all that happens, we never once properly visit the imperium or go down to a planet. Most of the time is spent in the void, or on "Tortuga", named for being a future, spacegoing version of the historical Tortuga. I guess in book 2 we're going to follow Bond around on Earth as she tries to get humanity's affairs back in order. I can already foresee the headaches she'll have trying to convince the Resistance to stop, well, resisting.

The Terran Privateer Duchy of Terra Book 1 eBook Glynn Stewart Reviews

I really like this book and I loved how the author presented his story. My only thing that caused it to lose one star and that brought me to the title on this is that almost the first half of the book he puts a lot of words in italics, often two or more on a page per page, or even two or three in a paragraph on Words that did not need that. To me they're like hitting roadblocks, or those bumps in the street to slow you down. Many of the words didn't really make sense as to why they were put down as italics, Blood by the middle or so of the book he seems to have corrected that problem to a great extent. I was able to read the rest of the book and really enjoy it and the concepts. I even went ahead and bought the second book in the series, and there is none of the italic problem there. His writing in the second book is getting tighter. he is becoming, through the book, a very enjoyable writer with a really enjoyable story. Despite how this may sound I truly do recommend this series, trust me you'll get through the first part of the first book.
I have to say that I was a bit hesitant about this book. I’ve had it on my reading list for a while but I am always a bit hesitant about books that start with Earth being conquered, overrun or downright destroyed. However, after having read the Vigilante series by the same author, although co-authored by Terry Mixon, I decided to have a go at it.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not that I really expected the book to be bad or anything but, as it turned out, I ended up liking it…a lot.

Yes there is the thing about Earth being conquered and there is the stuff about our hero being screwed over by her fellow officers (male of course just to be politically correct…sigh) when trying to bring a rapist to justice. But it gets better from there.

The story really starts when Captain Bond takes of into space after having delivered perhaps not a blow but certainly a sting to the invading forces. Her secret mission to become a privateer, obtain knowledge and technology, and give Earth a chance to repel the invaders.

Naturally she embarks on quite an adventure. This another one of those books that, although being military science fiction, is more of an space adventure story. Bond will meet aliens, buy technology, steal technology, kill pirates, become a pirate and generally kick ass. Bond herself is a quite capable, honorable and very likable hero. So is a lot of her shipmates. The latter group expands considerable during the journey. Obviously these new additions are not human.

As I write this more of an adventure story than true military science fiction so there are perhaps some elements which are a bit off the realism scale. Like giant pirate space stations hidden around and being able to just buy anything from handguns to battleships. Not to mention how quickly advanced technology can be retrofitted onto a strange ship from the backwater planet of Earth.
Speaking of backwater planet. Although it is true that Earth generally lags far behind on the technology scale they actually do have a technological edge in a few areas. An edge which gives them a surprising, for their opponents at least, advantage when it’s ass kicking time.

As with any good adventure story there are a few twists and turns along the ride but I have to say that the surprise at the end was…well…surprising. I did like it though.

I noticed that some reviewers wrote down the book a lot for some perceived LGBTQ preaching. I cannot say that I found much preaching in the book. A few cases of must-get-something-PC-in-there perhaps but nothing really preaching. Yes there are homosexual characters in the book. So what? I do not like heavy handed politically correct preaching in books I read so I think I would have noticed if there were much of it going around.

Bottom line, another series that I will continue. Sigh I have too many of those for my own good right now.
